A ride on the ferry.

A few of you have been asking about Somewhere Else and where that might be. That is a very good question indeed and we'll let you know as soon as we find out.

[Please check back in about 2 years.]

One of the best things about making a life change is a new appreciation of what you already have.

Yesterday, after having been a good girl all week and finishing a phenomenal spring clean [even if I say so myself], I was let out to play with some friends. I took a ferry from one of our neighbourhood wharves and in under 15 minutes, was at Circular Quay in the city. From there, it was a short 5 minute walk to Our Famous Opera House.

Here are some pictures I took of my little night out with the girls [and 1 man], sans the delicious half-naked men we went to see. [I was too busy ogling to take pictures of them.]
Here comes the ferry! Only a little late.
This one plies between Darling Harbour [in the background] and Circular Quay. That tallest little needle is Centrepoint Tower which we have yet to go up. Typical. You always think you have all the time in the world to see things in the city you live in.

 And off we go!
Icons to the foreground and back.
I'm assuming I don't have to name them or they wouldn't be icons.
Icon to the left too. *yawn* This city has too many icons. Is YOUR city like that?
Watch your head! Here we go, under the Harbour Bridge!
And out the other side.
Welcome to Circular Quay and Sydney's main ferry terminal!
Please ignore the sign that says Railway Station.
I definitely got off the ferry here.

Here's the walk from the wharf to the Opera House.
Under those umbrellas is one of many cafes in the area. If you intend to eat here, bring lots of money. I've never in my life paid 9.50 for 3 tiny dumplings before and I will carry that experience to the end of my days.
Have I, or have I not, mentioned there are a lot of birds in Sydney?

Here's when I got drunk on 1 little glass of wine.
Or was it 2?

After the rip-off a tiny dinner and drinks, we went to watch our show. I was too old and cheap knackered to party on after the show, and left my young friends to their drinks and giggles.  Despite a still somewhat stinky knee, I made it to the wharf in time to catch the ferry!
It was a bloody* cold trip home [because I stayed out on the deck to take more pictures] and I think I might have caught a cold.
Doesn't the park look a whole lot better in the dark?
And finally, home sweet home!
I hope you enjoyed the ride on the ferry! It's one of my favourite things to do in our neighbourhood :) X

* Rose assures me this is not considered a swear word in Australia and that it's totally dinky-di to use it.

Specially for the ladies reading this, here's what we went to see.

What were you expecting? Manpower?

That looks like a fun day, and I especially like the night shots. Saturday, I'll be taking the little ferry from my village to the next island over - I shall take photos coming and going!

Oh, please do! You live in such a beautiful neck of the woods :)

Thanks for giving the up close & personal of your ferry ride. Sydney is a place on the "to visit" list.
The show looked like fun. Watching shirtless, well muscled guys is always a good time!

Thank you for sharing your evening. Looks like it was well worth getting a little cold over. Of course, I'm not the one that's sick. Hope you feel better real quick.

Thanks for the trip. Loved it.
I can't watch the video right now, as I'm in the middle of a bus, and fear the consequences of ditto video on my reputation...

I am just overflowing and filled with the love today Typist ...........
I love these pics of your ferry ride and all the icons and the opera house and the show.......
I love the fact that you caught a cold just for us.........
I love that the show wasn't bloody Manpower or Penis Puppetry .......
I love the fact that within the depths of my country letter-box lay in wait my precious little parcel from you Typist! - which I retrieved only a little while ago.
I love my Brazilian Wish bracelets which I reckon I know what to do with (3 knots - 3 wishes - different colours mean different things - and on the ankle is OK?)
I love the tradition and the meaning behind it all.
I love the gorgeous Balmain Postcards........
I love my very own personalised brown paper bag which I will cherish but most of all? ....
I love that you remain ...... the Typist :)

Vero - I'm sure your reputation would have stayed intact! We're a G rated blog. Remember?

Rose, I never knew you were a poet. I'm glad you got the ribbons. Your address sounded quite bush ;)And good girl for doing your homework.

To be specific, tie 1 knot, make 1 wish, tie 2nd knot, make 2nd wish ...etc. Ankles are fine, as are dog collars and bags. I use some on my luggage to distinguish them on airport carousels. [Not so helpful in Brazil where many people do the same.] I don't think the colours have any meaning attached though. Remember...once you've tied one on, you have to wait for it to fall off BY ITSELF for the wishes to come true. Warning! They can start to look very grotty after a few weeks, or years. Have fun Miss Rose and 'ave a bloody good weekend! :) X

Ah, didn't know about the tie one knot, make one wish bit, so glad you said!! Oh goodie smelly and grotty - bring it on.
Wow Wow about the Blogger business, big reply to you back at my place.

What a beautiful place you live in, especially at night! I envy you all your iconic places. The highlights of Roanoke are a bank built out of an old grain station and an old silo with a tree growing out of the top. And what a cool performance! I was wondering a little when you were talking about half naked men...

I hope you ladies enjoyed the sneak peak. It looked a lot better from the front row, especially the guy with the dreads *drool* [I might not be let out again when Cushion reads this.]

Bunny's mama, you made me laugh! I would love to see a picture of your silo with the tree. Did an acorn fall in by mistake?

Looks like a great time and a beautiful area!

It looks great there. What a wonderful place to live.

Thanks for the great tour of your beautiful city. So many people ignore the sights and attractions that they live with all the time.

On my bucket list is definitely a trip to Australia but my question is, why would anyone leave there?

That ferry ride looks really rad! You took a lot of fantastic pictures.

Does anybody consider "bloody" to be a swear word anymore? I mean, it might be less than polite, anyway,

Sydney is definitely on my bucket list. Would love to visit one day! Oh and the half naked men? Wonderful!

I love this post! I love all the pretty pictures! I love that somehow I missed the fact you live across the bay(?) from Sydney. (Doh!) And I love, love, love the show you went to see. Going to have to see if that's coming to my neck of the woods sometime in the future. Although, it appears to have already passed close to my woods. :(

As for our icons, I live in a town that no one's ever heard even if they live here... BUT I do live near Boston and, if I'm not mistaken we have an icon or two that might be recognized around the world. You might not know us by our architecture but our sports history is legendary. ;)

Too much fun! The Halifax ferry isn't nearly so exciting. Also, there are no beautiful men on the other side. What a disapointment.

Whoa--that's some amazing capoiera- esque dance! Great to have a day with the galpals sometimes. Looks like you made the most of it.

Jan - Sydney is now one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in - not the best spot for 2 retirees to stretch their savings! Besides, we get bored easily and have been here, on and off, since 1991. We could move to another place in Oz but that would only help marginally, we think, from a savings point of view. Many friends and locals, even from among our dog community, have relocated. Some have gone overseas because it's just cheaper there.

Leslie - Yes, Balmain is a peninsula, which is why many of the pictures of Georgia and her friends playing have water views. It's very close to the CBD, 10 minutes by bus (if it turns up). If you take the ferry in the other direction, Darling Harbour is just the next stop and 5 minutes away. It's a pretty neat neighbourhood :)

I agree that it's good to spend time appreciating where you are even when you're looking for new pastures. It's sort of like trying to bring vacation into your every day life instead of always wishing you were on vacation.

I loved coming along on your ferry ride. Most cities look best from the water.

Too bad your ferry isn't dog friendly. Many are.

Loved the video and all those icons! Girls-night-out is supposed to be about fun and it looks like it was a good one.

I want a ferry! And yours is all jaunty - yellow and painted with what looked like a lotus blossom.

I hope those hip hop it boys make their way to LA. A birthday present to my mom would be a great way for ME to enjoy them in person!

Your nabe is great, really it is. Sometimes that bar on darling (can't think of the name but it's associated with a hotel and RBT and The Cushion liked to go there) pops into my mind when I'm thinking about nice spots to sit and watch the world go by.
