  2. I had an emu burger once - low fat, high protein...it was good. Never roo and certainly never possum!!

  3. Well I not sees da big deal withs possum burgers. Personally, it would be a dream come true fur me! I'd loves it...but mum is makin them vomittin' sounds as I type.
    Seen on a blog today they has beetroot burgers...bleh!

    Some of this meat is quite expensive and served in top restaurants. I don't think too many suburban hausfraus cook them. For what it's worth, I have tried crocodile [tastes like chicken, what else], emu and roo [great high protein low fat meat as ROTTROVER says].

    PUDDLES, Georgia gets a bit of possum in her diet and yes, that would be road or feral cat kill. You would love it here!

    BTW, beetroot in burgers are da bomb! :)

  9. Oh, that is SO funny!!
    You know what, when Ma was young (MANY moons ago...) Grandpa use to buy 'Buffalo' burger patties, and Ma thought they were called that because they were 'king size'. She didn't know she was eating Buffalo!!! BOL Oh, what a ditz!!
    It wasn't until YEARS later that she realized that all those burgers she thought were beef, were really Buffalo!! heehee
    It's okay, they really didn't taste any different...
    Now, those possom burgers...yummers!! Can I gets one tartare? I likes my possom raw ya know!! BOL

    BARB, I didn't even know they had possums in the States. I thought they were an Australian native marsupial. Duh me.

    Buffalo king-size. Haha! I can see how your mom got confused, RUBY. I had buffalo once a long time ago. As I remember, it was Tough!

  13. Bison (buffalo) is quite popular here and we buy it at our local grocery. I've also had ptarmigan, whale, caribou, elk, venison - mostly when I lived in the far north. Ostrich is becoming a popular option where I lived before moving here - I had it a few times, but didn't find it as flavourful as beef. And I love rabbit, though it is hard to find in stores here.
    We have possums here too, but never in our grocery stores or burger joints. Strictly roadkill!
    I think the only animals I could never, ever eat (other than rodents - blech) are cats and dogs. I was completely turned off certain Asian foods after an investigative reporter found dog meat used instead of chicken in some restaurants. That was years ago, and I still can't eat Asian beef or chicken dishes.

  14. Good try KIRSTEN! If they were Buddhist vegetarian meats, they would be made of gluten. Not this lot though!

    That's a pretty adventurous palate, JEAN. I like to try different things too, within reason. I avoid anything endangered, and cats and dogs! Also snails and insects LOL. I know in my head that it's just cultural cringe so I try to be open about what people eat. I mostly get upset only with the way the animals are husbanded, despatched or prepared. Some of the methods are beyond appalling.

    I read an article this morning, about how horse meat used to be eaten in many places including Britain [as a cheap source of protein in hard times]. And of course, it still is in countries like France and Italy. I remember my first sighting of a horse head hanging in a butchery in Paris. Gag. One man's food... :)

  15. Now wait a second, I was just in Melbourne and saw a sign in the park next to the Melbourne Museum that said that possums are protected. I guess they don't receive protection in Sydney! And they certainly don't in the U.S. Poor things are very discriminated against here. Even though they eat snails which are garden destroyers!

    Now that you mention it, I think you're right. Possums are protected, so how..... Hmmm. Have we accidentally hit upon something illegal going on here? Maybe it's a different not endangered type? Now I'm curious.

    So I guess it is, in at least one state. Maybe the meat is imported from Tassie? I shall ask the butcher next time I'm there.

    I've eaten roo, emu, crocodile, not possum.
    As a kid I ate horse, stopped when the kids started riding.difficult to jump on a three legs horse, isn't it?
    I eat rabbit too.
    And there is an ostrich farm a few miles away, the meat s quite expensive.

  21. As a Portland, Ore., native I would not eat possum. Ever. Weird, creepy critters. Sorry.

    Kangaroo, maybe. Would have to to get past my childhood associations with Winnie the Pooh and Kanga and Roo.

    But if enough butter, garlic and white/red wine (what goes with kangaroo) was involved, I'd cave in a heart beat.

  23. Ooooooooh, possum is awful, but a roasted leg of roo from a youngish roo grazed on sweet grasses is delish.
    I haven't tried croc though.

    Sounds like no one likes possum! Thank goodness because they're really too cute to batter and deep fry.

    TOOTS - What is a spatchcock? Heaps interesting question. In Australia, it refers to a small or young chicken. I believe however, that spatchcock is actually a method of preparing poultry which involves butterflying it. Perhaps someone who's more in the know will answer your question better!

  29. Meat is meat and I'm a dawg...it all looks great to me :) Seriously we call possum "road kill" and it's usually free BOL! Bunny & deer are delicacies and you usually have to know a hunter to get some...'Roo & emu I've never seen here, except from exotic meat suppliers at outrageous prices...What I get from this is that our US tastes are pretty darn pedestrian and our diet kind of bland and boring...beef, pork and chicken are about it for the average market here

  32. I've eaten bear, turtle, snail, alligator, venison, moose, elk, buffalo, shark, pheasant and even ostrich but I draw the line at possum. I refuse to eat a creature that looks like an overgrown snaggle toothed rat. Ewwwww.

  33. Oh wow! You can buy kangaroo tail in the butcher's down there? You can only get it out on the communities up here. I'd love to give Flo and Elsie one of them, I reckon they'd love it.
