The earthworm, the gympie-gympie and the pigdog.

Is it really true that Australia has an absurd number of scary animals? This writer seems to think so -

"There's a reason Australia is surrounded by nothing but water. God is trying to protect you from the hell trapped within."

BWAH haha! I say.
What a wuss!

Forget our box jellies and bull sharks, our cane toads and funnel web spiders.

Has anyone seen our earthworms?

Or a gympie-gympie?

Here is another less-talked-about scary animal commonly found in the Australian backyard.

The spoilt-rotten Canis lupus familiaris.

"Listen here. If you do not give me some space on this bed, I will sit on your stomach and not move until you turn blue and die. I mean it."

  1. Remarkable! Wow, that gympie-gympie plant. Georgia, you can sit on me any day...just keep me away from that plant!

  2. People think I' m crazy because I.m laughing in the bus, on my own... And a few days ago I smiled at a dog, calling her a pigie dog, just because she looked like Georgia...
Anyway, my cat Osiris must have discussed with Georgia. She spends every whole night sleeping on my chest... The charm of cat breath in your nose...
    Have a nice weekend

  3. Good God, that Gympy Gympy is really something else! What terrifying creatures. We have some scary stuff here too but nothing quite like that. Though the large dog who lies on top of humans with no regard to their struggles for breath is native to the East Coast of the US as well.

  4. Ohhhhh that is SO scary I think I want to run right over and give her a great big hug!

  5. the shot of the open mouth reminded us of the movie "Jaws." But the rest of the pictures just reminded us of "aw, how sweet."

  6. Okay, the giant earthworm and the gympie-gympie are enough to keep me from EVER visiting Australia. I'll take our bears and cougars any day; you can keep your worms and evil plants.

But the last one - the spoilt-rotten Canis lupus familiaris - I am afraid it may have already spread world wide, though the ones I've met here don't have quite the size and skill of the Strylian ones.
I do believe 'death by Canis lupus familiaris' might make a good plot for a murder mystery, don't you? Woman found crushed to death in bed, door locked and no sign of forced entry, only witness is her faithful dog (who is looking slightly starved and gazing soulfully at the food dish). Who dun it?

  7. Dear VERO, I hope the dog's owner didn't think you were calling her dog FAT. Hahaha! I laughed a lot too, when I saw Dr Mike. Poor man.

JEAN, that is a great plot and would have made a super title for this post too! In our case, I suspect The Dog would be eating the remains and thus be The Most Likely Suspect. She's a waste not, want not type of girl is our Georgia and has a fondness for dead things ;)

  8. See! See! Even the worms will kill you! I bet Australia even has deadly pebbles. Beautiful country, I am sure, kind of like how polar bears are beautiful animals. But both are best viewed in photographs. ;-)

  9. Holy Gympie gympie Batman, er we mean Georgia. We live in Oz and had never heard of this plant. We thought Dr Mike was joking! Sounds even worse than the Redback on the toilet seat!

Rory says he is going to try and sleep on mum and dad's bed and if they say one word, he'll tell them to speak to you ok? Love your photos. No worries, and love, Stella and Rory

  10. Dear MS TONKS, I was thinking of you (and Pamela) when I wrote this! Please don't get hysterical. I don't think the earthworms actually kill (though there have been urban myths about strangulation). To be honest, they scare me more than the gympie gympie.

STELLA AND RORY, I thought Dr Mike was hamming it up too! Apparently not. For anyone who wants more advanced reading and puking, check this out - http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/journal/gympie-gympie-once-stung-never-forgotten.htm

  11. Aw Ms Pea, you are cuddle material for sure. I love your muzzle.
I CANNOT believe that "moi" has never even heard of the gympie-gympie plant!!! I have imprinted a visual of it on my mind.
If I wasn't an Aussie, don't reckon I'd ever come here, its not safe indoors - it's not safe outdoors! Go to New Zealand, they have nothing at all over there, not even a snake!

  12. G'day MS ROSE! Bloody horrible day it is here too. Grey and wet. Hope it's better up the road.

I reckon the worst thing about the gympie gympie is that it doesn't even have the common courtesy to look evil. Devious thing. I didn't know there were no snakes in NZ! Can't live there then. Love the buggers ;)

  13. I love those pictures, of you, not the giant worm.

  14. LOL - we'll keep to the cities if we ever visit.

  15. Dear SAM, you obviously haven't read about our cane toads, funnel webs, red backs, cockies, rats, flies, mozzies, giant slugs and attack birds. Those are our (city) backyard critters. Sharks in our harbour too. Good luck! Buy insurance.

  16. Oh my so interesting trust your SAHH to find them.
    Hahahahaha Georgia you are hilarious!!!!

  17. Yegads! Remind me never to go hiking in Australia! The worms didn't scare me, but that plant -- what happens if you need to pee on one of those? It boggles the mind!

I think somebody better get your breakfast right away!

  18. You have to hand it to her; you really do! Deccy x

  19. I have to assume giant earthworms are used to catch giant fish out there in that water surrounding Australia. :)

Not that I'm saying certain Styrlian animals are any less scary...especially if breakfast doesn't come quickly!! Oh, and we know about spoiled rotten canines here too.

  20. You make me wag! Every canine wanderer deserves a good bed and nap! But the gympie gympie? Yikes.

    ReplyDelete
  21. haha! Georgia, you make me and stevie pup howl with laughter! xxx

  22. The worms & plant were scary, but the giant Strylian pigdog made us LOL! Georgia is awesome, in both size and attitude!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Catching up and must tell you I laughed out loud at these Georgia pics. What a dog! She is a rolfer in a dog suit.

  24. You are slowly convincing me NOT to visit AU ever, ever, ever! Worms that make noise when they move underground? Plants that can keep stinging you for weeks after exposure? That's just N.A.S.T.Y.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh Georgia, you're very, very scary! I would definitely share the bed with you.

  26. Are those videos for real? Seriously?! The earthworms made me queasy and the guy with the gympy gympy cracked me up!

Those worms are Mason's dream come true. He loves to roll on worms in the grass. The part about how those giant ones are delicate and will break apart? I'm telling you, Mason's dream come true.

    Gurgle, gurgle. Gross!

GLP you are adorable in your jambes ... even when you are issuing threats!
