Good morning!

Do you think I have enough antioxidants and fibre for the day?
That's a tablespoon in a very large bowl. Maybe there'll be enough good stuff there to blow away the beginnings of flu.

The mango is a new discovery. It's not everyone's favourite Kensington Pride and the fruit shop man strangely didn't know what it's called. It's a bit fibrous, but the flesh is dripping with juice and it's even sweeter than a KP!

The pink guava and figs are fresh plucked from my brother's garden. After reading how nutritious guava is (and apparently good for losing weight),  I cut a third one into the bowl.

The man still isn't home yet. He's succumbed to a staph infection. I feel quite useless here now. I've done as much cooking and cleaning as I want to, and don't think I should go anywhere near an ICU with a sniffly nose. Let's hope the bowl of fruit does its job and doesn't just send me potty.

  1. looks darn yummy to me - I'm a bit of mango addict and LOVE guava - I don't think they even know what they are here in the USA

  2. Looks yummy. I especially love mango.

I hope it staves off further sickness.

Try to make the most of your quiet time waiting for your brother to come home. I'm sure you've had plenty of days where you'd love to have nothing to do. :)

I'm so sorry about the infection. Hospitals are very dangerous places. Once the specialty treatment is over, it's a good idea to get out of there as quickly as possible. Your brother would probably have a better chance against your sniffles than the things that roam hospital halls.

  3. That looks great. I could even forget that it is healthy and enjoy it a lot.

  4. Oh dear. I was wondering how The Frugal One was doing. I hope he sorts out that infection pronto. Poor thing. It won't help if he knows that you and Sister 2 are staying and using far more water than he would ordinarily. Best wishes to him.

As for that fruit. WOW! It looks wonderful. You'll have to get some blueberries into you too. I had to have a day off a couple of weeks ago because the kids kindly shared their snot-inducing germs with me, but I hit it hard and fast with (I think it was Blackmore's) Vit C. It seemed to really shorten the duration of the dripping nose and general malaise. It was the 1000mg tablets. Not the chewy orange flavoured ones. And I was religious in the 3 a day for the first couple of days in addition to lots and lots of fruit. Hope you can knock it on the head pronto.

  5. That looks so totally yummy...we get guava and mango here but generally just one kind of each and no info on what type they are...and fresh figs are really hard to find...

So sorry to hear about your brother...it scares me how often folks do get sick in hospitals... hope he gets sprung soon

  6. Oh REILLY/DENNY'S MAMA, I bet you miss your KPs! Stil the best. After the season is over, I pretty much ignore the R2E2s, strawberry and coconut mangoes. Rubbish! This new one was A Find!

PAMELA, he was looking so good when I first arrived, and that's the sad part. Staph is too common in hospitals here.

H, I'm not a pill popper so I will just have to eat a bucket of fruit a day. Blueberries I love but who can afford them at almost $8 a punnet? I saw on the news last night that Qld is already recording a spike in flu. This early! Sister 2 arrives Monday, I go home on Tuesday. I've done the hard graft so she'll just have to hold his hand ;)

GIZ, but you live in Florida! You should have more or less the same fruits as us? Fresh figs YUM. At almost $20 a kilo at the supermarket, I'm pretty happy my brother has a tree.

I think Georgia is missing you so much she is howling.

Get well soon to u too!

  9. I'm just realizing that I've never eaten a guava. I will correct that. I'm too old not to have eaten a guava.

  10. ANNY, a mango is a mango? Sacrilege! They are so different! The KP is, I believe, descended from an Indian mango. The other stuff here is mostly rubbish. Made to look good but not much taste. Thai mangoes are the best! The elephant tusk and black gold. OMG. I would love to have some right now! I think ET is my most favourite mango in the world :D

LORI, you poor deprived thing. I hope you find some. Watch the seeds, they can be hard!

  11. I do hope you don't get sick! Hopefully your brother will be home to enjoy the mangoes soon!

  12. Ohh that looks delicious! I love mango, and I tried fresh figs for the first time last summer - yum! I haven't had guava - may have to look for it here.
Sure hope you stay healthy - definitely not a good scenario if you are coughing and spluttering when your brother gets released from hospital!

  13. Gotta get the Olive Leaf Extract into you! (only the Qld one though) true, its the farm with the best practices. I buy it by the 5 litre and take 2 dessertspoons every single day.
Why? why? are these staph infections so prevalent in our hospitals??!! No wonder you hear so many people swearing they won't go to one out of fear.
Take care T and dear brother.

  14. JEAN, another deprived person! There are different types of guava. My favourite is probably the apple guava, crunchy, juicy, no small hard seeds. See if you can find those.

ROSE, I actually think I got my sniffles from being in a hospital so much the last week. I'm not normally a sickie (sport injuries aside).

I heard a horror story from 2 of my brother's friends day before yesterday. Another mutual friend went in for heart surgery in the same hospital (it is the best heart hospital around), the wound got infected and they had to open him up (again) to clear the infection, and kept the chest open for 4 days! He was put in an induced coma! Then they sent him home to recover rather than keep him in the hospital and sent a doctor out every day for a home visit instead. Have you heard anything so frightening? :( We are just hoping for the best now.

  15. Hope your bro and you are feeling better soon, you should probably bring him some of that delicious fruit salad. :) I just had some frozen blueberries, I wonder if they would survive the trip to Oz from Massachusetts?

  16. I hope your brother can get home soon, in good shape.
    This breakfast looks yummy.
    Take care

  17. I have never eaten a guava, let alone a pink one, but I'd love to try it. Fresh figs are so yummy but are scarce in Canada.

Best wishes to your brother for a speedy recovery. Hospitals suck :(

  19. Gosh T, that story put the shivers through me, so, I am going to say a little Rose-prayer for dear brother's speedy recovery. He's from tough stock, right?

  20. Sending good vibes to your brother! EEK! Staph infection in the hospital! Why does that happen so much? Tell him I am trying to use water like a Rwandan. I'm catching the drips to fill up my watering can.

  21. MAGGIE and DUKE, even if they survived the trip, they wouldn't survive our quarantine ;)

I thought he was, ROSE. First op in 65 years.

You're so good LIVIE and PETEY. I think Petey says, just forget bathing me. EVER!

Thank you EVERYONE for your good wishes! X

  22. That looks like a wonderful breakfast!

I hope your brother improves quickly!

  23. That fruit looks good to me! My breakfast was drive-thru from McDonald's (and was hardly worth eating, I might add). Hope the vitamins and antioxidants do their job and fight off the sniffles. And I hope your brother will recover from the staph infection quickly.

  24. We are sending good healing thoughts to your brother. Hope he comes home soon to partake of that delicious yummy fruit salad!

  25. That looks soooo good. I love mango. And imagine, picking the passion fruit and figs fresh like that!!

  26. Love, love, love Mango. Unfortunately it's hard to get decent ones in Canada, especially this time of year. I have to sell for the frozen variety, which is just not the same.

I am sorry your brother is still in the hospital! The infection is a tough break. Poor guy. :-(

  27. I'm very sorry to hear about the staph infection. I seem to be hearing more and more accounts of infections following procedures. I'm really glad you're there for him although I know it must be getting stressful. Which probably accounts for you feeling poorly. Stress is a terrible thing. I hope the delicious bowl of fruit helped a bit - I love of all of kinds but recently I've had a real thing for figs and can't wait till our summer here to indulge in them again!

  28. Boost your vitamins c and d too. :-) I've added your brother to my prayer list and hope he is on the mend and on his way home soon. We need to make sure you have something to do. :0

  29. KRISTINE, I don't know what frozen mango tastes like sliced up, but I bet it would be excellent for making lassi!

CHANDRA, it's ironic, isn't it? The procedure went like a dream.

Thank you JODI. Thank you EVERYONE x

  30. Mmm, I LOVE a fruit bowl like that. When I stayed in Guatemala I ate nothing but those big papaya; harder to find around here but still possible. Stay healthy--looks like a good way to do it.

  31. Yummmm. Mango, guava and figs. Sounds like a good combo! I'll have to remember it when our summer comes and figs are in season.

I'm sorry to hear your brother contracted an infection. I'm sure he's being taken good care of and will be out soon!

  32. Good luck to both of you.
If you feed him a bowl of fruit like that he’ll soon be back on his legs.
It’s wondrous for me that the fruit is local and you can pick most of it at your leisure. Ours comes hard and unripe via air miles.

  33. I'm sorry to hear that your bother has an infection and you're feeling under the weather as well. I hope you're both as good as new soon.
