The traveller's fervent plea.

Day 7 of our road trip.

I have an ear ache, which started the night before the flight. Both ears are now completely stuffed with a mixture of swimmers ear drops (from Cushion's stash of travelling medication), antibiotic drops (from Dr Bryan of Coromandel Town, NZD80 for consult + NZD15 for drops), and a baking soda solution (recipe free from Dr WebMD). I can't hear a thing and am learning to read lips. Cushion playing doctor. Details of what he's doing too disgusting to blog about, but if you must know, it involves a straw.

Got stung by a jelly fish at Hot Water Beach 2 nights ago. "Very strange," the locals said, "It's not jelly fish season." No after hours doctor available, closest one a ferry ride away. Bathed foot and ankle in urine (on the advice of young man with experience, urine kindly donated by Cushion) and white vinegar (kindly donated by restaurant at lodging), took an antihistamine (from Cushion's stash of travelling medication), applied pawpaw ointment for good measure.

Flu now coming on. Possibly from hiking up Mount Maunganui in rain yesterday. Achoo. Cough cough. Feverish. Taking antibiotics (from Cushion's fast depleting stash of travelling medication)

About to start off on a hike through the Waimangu Volcanic Valley. Please, Cosmic Protector of Intrepid Travellers, please don't let me step into a boiling mud pool or get spat on by a geyser. I'd really appreciate a break. Thank you.

  3. Oh, no. The only advice I can give regards the ear, though I'm not sure if you want to stuff anything else in there. Buy a tube of Bacitracin and swab some in the ear with a q-tip.

  4. I think the appropriate photo for this post is one of those postcards that say, "Having a great time! Wish you were here!" Hope you've used up all the "yuck."

  5. Maybe you're getting everything out of the way early? Hope you're feeling better soon!

  6. It sounds to me like it is time to go home, pick up Georgia, and appreciate what you have right in your own backyard. I definitely got over wanderlust a long time ago - there's no place like home. Just sayin'.

  10. Oh my goodness Typist. Did Georgia put a curse on you? Thank goodness for Cushion's big bag of medication! I hope you feel better soon - I reckon it'll take seven days with medication or a week without. :)

  11. Oh, Typist!

Feel better soon. There are few things worse than falling apart on the road; I know that one. Ugh.

    Dear Traveler Gods:

    Please heal Typist immediately.

    Thank you.

    Love,
    Tootsie & Renee

  13. Wow, that's an expensive Dr you chose! I went to mine for the first time in 7 years a few weeks ago and he was only $36. I hope you're not going to be crook for all your holiday, is The Cushion OK? You didn't leave GLP a photo of you that she's sticking pins into did you? Make sure you stay on the paths when you're wandering around hot pools and the like! Sounds like you're certainly making some memories ... maybe not the best ones ever though!

  14. No choice, ROSE. We're all the way here and will do whatever, even if I drop dead doing it. Okay, maybe that's being a tad melodramatic. I hope I can make the Tongariro Crossing. It's supposed to be quite tough. Going there tomorrow!

I think it was an Aussie price, SUE :( Maybe also a small town price? We noticed there were 3 different rates at the reception desk. NZD12 was the cheapest (for retirees maybe?), followed by 60, then 80. While we were baulking at the exorbitant cost, the doctor came out of his consulting room and insisted I get my ears checked out. He'd overheard me telling the receptionist what was wrong with them. I actually believe he would have done it gratis except that he had to bring out *ahem* equipment and write a script.

  15. Oh my...I hope it all turns better soon. Best restock on the meds just in case. I think the travel gods will smile on you now and grant you great times, and sunny days.

  16. Holy Crap!!! What the hell happened?! I thought things like that only happened to Ma...if there is a jelly fish bite to be had, a flu to catch, or a rare tropical disease to catch...all would happen to Ma!
Thank Dog Cushion brought a pharmacy with him ~ Ma does the same thing. You just never know, and it's better to have it than to not.
Well, just thinks, it can only get better from here, right?
Oh, and don't feel bad abouts the cost of the doc, it's about the same price here....NUTS!!
    Kisses,
    Ruby

and how'd the hike go? and did the flu grip you good, or let you go....
(Mmm, I know house/dog sitters can be v.e.r.y. difficult to get)

  19. Umm...does Georgia have a voo-doo doll at Camp Couldbegreat? Your trip sounds cursed! Good luck for the rest of your trip. Fingers crossed that the bad stuff is over and from here on it's nothing but fun and health (and no jelly fish or broken legs or sick Cushion).

  20. OMD that sounds awful. Maybe that's why I don't travel. Or go on vacation. lol. I hope you feel better soon and the rest of the trip is joyful!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh no, this is not right! I certainly hope you're feeling better today and that the rest of the trip is PERFECTION.

  22. Oh, you poor dear. I hope that you've recovered your health (although I'm thrilled to see you never lost your sense of humor) and are having a great time now.

BTW, I don't know if urine really works for jelly fish or not. But ammonia is a good substitute for it. Unless, of course, you and the Cushion just like the kinky stuff.

  23. Oh, no my dear friend!
I hope you're feeling better very soon!
    Beijos e abraços.

  24. Yikes - I hope as I read more recent posts, your health has improved dramatically! I'd say have a coupe of glasses of wine and skip the urine.

  25. Gosh you poor thing!! I was thinking it was the "You left me behind" curse too. :-( I hope you are feeling better now.
