Night at the intersection.

Does it look a little different? That's the QVB building diagonally across the intersection.

And directly across from where I'm standing on George Street, is our Town Hall.
Every Christmas, there's a light show projected on the building.

As you can see, the clock tower is currently being restored which means the show is a bit underwhelming this year.

This is what it looked like in a previous year.
Pic from HERE.

Sad isn't it! Anyway, here's what it looked like on Wednesday night, on my way home from capoeira class.

Can you guess what's happening here?
Have a look at the video!

A little night magic that transforms back to humdrum in the light of day.
This photo was taken from more or less the same angle as the very 1st one in this post, but closer to the intersection.

>  If you have 55 more seconds to spare in this stressful pre-Christmas time, check out this clip. It's a gorgeous time lapse sequence of the light show from a previous year. MUCH nicer than the pictures here!

>  Sydney Town Hall is over 120 years old. The site, next to St Andrews Cathedral, was originally a cemetery. I don't know much about the place at all and only go there to access the CityRail station under the street in front of the building.

Keen beans can read about Town Hall and see more historical and modern images of the building and area HERE.

This old pic is from the link above. Sydney Town Hall with its clock tower is in the middle, QVB on the right, and on the left, a little obscured by Town Hall, is St Andrews Cathedral. The picture must be pre-1934. Excerpt from the link -

"When complete, the building had a large porte-cochere over the present (rebuilt) steps, and its own ring road inside a stone and iron palisade. Unfortunately, this area was destabilised in 1934 during tunnelling for the underground railway and the formal entry had to be demolished."

I think you now know this tiny part of Sydney as well as I do! the sweet and the sad. I hope you enjoyed the little tour. Thanks for coming along and for all your thoughts on the post that started it all. Have a great weekend :) X

The tour and video are great! That building looks like something out of a Beatle's film; very neat.

Thanks so much for the tour and holiday reflections.

I gots to say dat light show on da Town Hall is freakin' cool! See, we don't gets to sees neat stuffs likes dat cuz we lives in a small town and our town hall is like waaaaaay too small to has a light show on it. It would b like lightin' up a cardboard box. It just wouldn't be nearly as thrillin'.

My mum says thank you fur da sweet comments on her fotos...but I knows you was just really talkin' bouts my beatiful self.

Thanks for the tour of beautiful buildings. So many old buildings are being torn down in the name of progress...so sad.

You make me want to spend more time in the historical part of my city. There is so much to capture in a single moment yet I've never gone down there with a camera. Perhaps you have inspired something.

KRISTINE, that would be lovely and I look forward to seeing pictures. Old cities, or parts of, are my favourite places to visit wherever I go!

Hi Georgia, I loved to see these photos of the Town Hall. I also loved the video and the piano music... so beautiful and so romantic...

We had much heavy rain yesterday and today, so my internet is a bit slow... so the video "Town Hall in lights" did not open to me. I will return to see it soon. Thanks anyway for sharing.

Hope you all have a nice weekend.

It's nice to be visit again... being the slack blogger I am these days..
yep I knew the site was one of the very first cemetaries, with remains being schlepped over to rookwood, and the whole job was botched because of greedy sub contractors. Much the same thing happened to the Camperdown rest park - where we frolic with the dog...

Hope you have a tidy house with all the sorting now, and that Xmas is a restful and happy time for your pack.

I love how your city goes all in - and all out - for Christmas! While it's a bummer that the clock tower is under renovation, it's pretty funny that they hung a cover painted with a clock tower over it!
